Product Safety of Inks in Commercial Printers and Copiers
Following reports of health symptoms at two work locations that were anecdotally linked with the operation of a commercial printer and its soybean oil-based ink; Gradient conducted a product safety evaluation to assess potential exposures and health risks associated with operation of the printer and handling of printed papers. We developed testing protocols for indoor air; paper surface; and hand wipe sample collection and analysis for a comprehensive set of test analytes (mineral oil; carbon black; glycerol; aldehydes; VOCs; and SVOCs) and oversaw implementation of this testing program. Gradient conducted a toxicological assessment for analytes found in the indoor air and surface wipe tests that reviewed health effects data and evaluated their relationship to the reported health symptoms. Gradient's analysis helped to determine if any specific emissions associated with printer usage could be likely causative agents for the reported health sympto
